hi i am 20 years old, i go to school at cal state univeristy fullerton, i cannot work a full time job, because i am going to school full time (18 units)..i have been getting good grades, the thing is i have been living with my mom since i started college 2 years ago...now my mom has to move to texas, and i was just wondering if anyone knew about a government grant or money i can receive to rent a room somewhere so i can continue studying.
any help would be appreciated..
i am already getting aid from fafsa for my studying...just need something for rent.
thank you
There are not any grants that I know of to cover rent in this situation. The only thing I can think of is that the additional cost of rent may raise your COA (cost of attendance). Your school uses this to determine how much need you have. Contacting your school to let them know that you are now paying for rent may or may not change your financial aid since the school already estimates living expenses for you automatically. But, if it turns out that your actual rent cost is more than what they have already estimated for you, it could increase your need. Increased need may lead to extra grant money or additional loan eligibility.
Not many are excited to be eligible for more loans, but this is a likely outcome as opposed to grants. But, if it's the difference between staying in college and finding a job instead - you may decide it's worth it (or not). I hope this helps and I hope that someone does know of a specific grant to help you. If you want to search for your own, here are some good search engines for grants.
